Working Group 2

Advanced materials & lubrication for sustainable ocean systems

WG2 aims to contribute to the sustainability and energy efficiency of ocean systems by coming up with innovative solutions for contact surfaces and lubricants applied in a marine environment.

Description of work: WG2 will start from a thorough literature analysis (T2.1), leading to publication of one or more review papers. Three particular research areas have already been identified as promising collaboration areas from a perspective of sustainability: (i) self-lubricating materials (T2.2); (ii) eco- friendly coatings (T2.3); and (iii) biodegradable lubrication (T2.4). For these areas, a joint R&D workshop will be organized to foster collaboration.

Tasks:

T2.1: Classification and review of SOTA (coating) materials and lubricants;

T2.2: Information & best practice exchange on self-lubricating materials;

T2.3: Extending the use of eco-friendly coatings;

T2.4: R&D routes towards uptake of biodegradable lubrication.

Engineering Sustainable Ocean Systems Through Tribological Innovation

Connecting European expertise to develop reliable, energy-efficient solutions for offshore wind, wave energy, and marine technologies.

COST

COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a funding agency for research and innovation networks. Our Actions help connect research initiatives across Europe and enable scientists to grow their ideas by sharing them with their peers. This boosts their research, career and innovation. www.cost.eu

The main aim of this Ocean Tribology Center (OTC) COST Action is to create a pan-European-wide network of countries with a strong offshore affiliation for promoting collaboration and knowledge-sharing towards the development of sustainable, reliable and energy efficient ocean systems.
